The
leadership dilemma.
The leadership or
management dilemma.
That is what I
call it. - The dilemma that exists
between people being able to manage
themselves, and people being able to
point toward a manager for him/her to
make the decission.
As you may know
from reading other of my blogs, I'm an
advocate of tearing down the
organizational hierarkies that are 100's
of years old.
Modern people are
more educated and informed than ever
before. - We do not need a manager to
tell us what to do or when.
But sometimes,
when in groups, there is some comfort in
being able to say: this is a question for
my manager to decide...
And that is the
leadership dilemma: wanting to not to be
told what to do, and asking for
directions.
Mostly I think
however, that the leadership dilemma is
still a product of our
"historical" way of thinking
about organizations.
So in the new way
we should organize our work, the leadership
dilemma will not be a dilemma any more -
we won't be able to hide behid the
"I'll ask my manager" syndrome
- but rather we have to make the
decisions on the spot, in the groups,
together, rather than relying on one
allknowing manager.
